Only slightly less outrageous is Venter’s other project, the Global Ocean Sampling Expedition, Venter’s self-proclaimed update on Darwin that is roaming the seas in Sorcerer II collecting not exotic species of animals, but microbes. Researchers on the yacht scoop up buckets of water and run them through filters in a small onboard lab that collects DNA from samples; the DNA is then frozen and shipped back to Venter’s lab. In Rockville, scientists use powerful sequencing machines to isolate and analyze whatever genes and species are present, some of which may hold keys to new sources of energy and other amazements. Venter hopes to discover up to hundreds of millions of new genes, increasing the known number of species on our planet by thousands of times. Venter flies back and forth from the boat to Rockville, splitting his time almost evenly. “We will be able to extrapolate about all life from this survey,” he told James Shreeve. “This will put everything Darwin missed into perspective.”

Shreeve wrote a cover story for Wired on the expedition in 2004 titled “Craig Venter’s Epic Voyage to Redefine the Origin of Species—He wanted to play God, so he cracked the human genome. Now he wants to play Darwin and collect the DNA of everything on the planet.” On the cover, an extreme close-up of Venter captures his bright blue eyes and an expression that looks typically diabolical, with eyebrows flaring and the beard looking like a salt-and-pepper version of Dick Dasterdly. One of my female friends found him sexy, despite his being twice her age.
